THE BEST VEGAN FRIED CHICKEN RECIPE (gluten-free!) | Mary's Test Kitchen

Not all brands of tofu will result in the flaky layers. Check the printable recipe for the list of Tofu brands/varieties have been tested and what readers/viewers have

Friends, this is the BEST vegan fried chicken recipe. It’s seriously crunchy on the outside with well-seasoned breading full of nooks and crannies. But the inside is what makes this vegan fried chicken different from all the rest. You won’t believe how tender, juicy and meaty this vegan ‘chicken’ tastes and looks. Flavour bursts from layers of ‘meat’ as you bite into it.

I stumbled across the secret to creating this realistic, crispy and juicy vegan chicken last year (you might have seen it on my Instagram stories) and have since perfected it so you can make it easily at home. Make deep-fried vegan chicken on your stove top or deep-fryer for the absolute best vegan chicken you’ve ever had. Or, you can bake these golden pieces of juicy perfection in the oven for the best oven-fried vegan chicken ever. And it’s gluten-free to boot!

BTW, using food that has been frozen and thawed twice is safe, as long as you do it right! Don’t forget to read the printable recipe before you start.

  • If you're in Australia and looking for "medium firm tofu" I'm pretty sure it is "lite firm tofu" and available from Coles. I've tried this and the results seemed to match the texture in the video.

  • I’m not a vegan but it seems that I want to try living in a plant-based lifestyle. It’s not just healthy but also cheaper 😊

  • I made some adjustments based on what i had on hand…
I used whole wheat flour, Corn Flakes and vegetarian no beef Better Than Bouillon.
As for the sauce, I added some maple syrup and ginger.

Turned out really good! I used a tofu that didn't flake the same way either. Still a success.

  • I dont like sauerkraut🤢 but evetything looked delicious. I am choosing a vegetarian lifestyle for awhile to lose weight and lower blood pressure. No meat (except fish or seafood), no dairy, no sweets, no processed foods. I did this about two years ago and I lost 23 ibls in 2 1/2 months with no exercise and I didnt have to count calories.

  • If I baked it in the oven , then let it sit for a bit and then air fried it. You think itll turn out okay?

  • OK, I'm not vegan and I made this for my first time , it was absolutely delicious. My husband loved it very much. The tofu was on sale at Walmart for 1.47$ a package. Wow, what a bargain. Made my own dipping sauce with why no had, ketchup, rice vinegar, soya sauce and a little of pigment pesto. Some pcs were a little to big. But still very good and crunchy like you said. We are totally impressed.

    1. Can I use Firm Tofu (instead of medium firm)?
    2. What happens if I can't find that n. yeast? Can I use something else?
