In this Microsoft Windows 10 Tutorial, we will learn how to run Windows Setup using GPT Partition Style without Data Loss. I have described two methods of installing Windows on a GPT Partition Style.

Method 1: Installing Windows on a GPT Partition Style Without Formatting or Erasing the Partitions. That means you can install Windows on a GPT volume without any data loss.

We will first use Rufus utility to create a USB bootable media to boot into UEFI Boot Mode instead of Legacy and then install Windows on a GPT partition without formatting or deleting any of your previous partitions.

Method 2: Install Windows on GPT Partition Style by deleting all the previous partitions and converting disk from GPT to MBR.

The second method which is the most common way of installing Windows on a GPT partition is to use the DISKPART utility to remove all the previous partitions/volumes to convert the disk back to MBR and then create new partitions and install Windows.

I have described both the methods and it is up to you that either you want to install windows on a GPT style without formatting or removing anything or you want to clean all the volumes and then create the new volumes.

Information also applies to the following versions:
Windows 7
Windows 8 / 8.1
Windows 10

  1. That confuses me when it looks like the previous OS is loading. That can be confusing and I can imagine some people erroneously restart their computer to try it again and again not realizing that they did not do it wrong. It should give you a clearer indication that the Windows installer is loading or even show Windows setup instead of the normal startup screen. It would only make it easier for people who have never installed Windows 10 before. Like Windows 7 it would give you a few seconds to press any key if you wanted to start setting up or repairing Windows 7 and not mislead you into thinking that the OS you wanted to repair or completely reinstall was loading instead. That is assuming that you have a bootable USB drive plugged in or a Windows 7 disc in the drive or you would obviously not see that.

  2. When I try to use partition as gpt getting error… When using UEFI target type, only EFI boota le ISO image are supported. Please select an EFI boota le ISO or set the target type to bios…. I have windows 10 and trying to install windows 7
