Fix The File or Directory is Corrupted and Unreadable Error

Whenever you plug in or open your USB flash drive or external hard drive you get the error message: “Location is not available” e: is not accessible The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

This can sometimes be fixed by running CHKDSK /F /R command in command prompt which is also known as (CMD). I would suggest you check the external hard drive or flash drive to make sure it’s not failing on you. Once you run the fix you should be able to recover all your data that was stored on that drive before it become corrupt and unreadable.

Here is the command: “CHKDSK E: /F /R (CHANGE E: TO YOUR DRIVE LETTER)

Make sure you run an elevated command prompt

That’s it

  1. Is this problem with the USB or file? In my case everytime I transfer a file to USB ,sometimes it reads the files but sometimes don't. I reset my USB already but it seems like the problem won't go away I also test it on different devices to see if it was the device but it seems like is the USB. Any recommendations

  2. Didn't work in my case, rather the file the folder that was visible (but inaccessible, of course) earlier is not visible anymore, apparently gone. So, this solution is worthless!

  3. hmmm, I have watched a couple videos that say pretty much the same thing that this one does, but every time I try that command it says "Access denied as you do not have sufficient [privileges or the disk may be locker by another process." I am using a brand new NVME M.2 drive so it shouldn't be corrupted and my bios reads it fine, so I can't figure out what's locking it. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas?

  4. Thank you from the bottom of my heart you have just help me recover some files I thought I lost forever Thanks once again

  5. I tried this and it doesn’t work. I type in the disk name and /f and /r and press enter and nothing happens.

  6. Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges or

the disk may be locked by another process.

You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode

and make sure the disk is unlocked.

  7. My laptop decided to scramble my USB stick. But this didn't work for me. The USB stick is still unreadable. :c Guess this doesn't work for everyone.

  8. thanks but it output:

The type of the file system is UDF.

Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

  9. it did not work for my USB drive although. After few initial checks it flashed a message "Deleting orphan file record segment 59980, which is readable and is not writable". With this my problem persists. Could you help? Thanks
