As a guitarist, you spend a fair amount of time alone practicing, writing, and honing your craft – necessary, but not always exciting. What if you had a bassist and drummer that were always available, ready to learn your song the first time you played it, were well-versed in multiple styles of music, started and stopped when you wanted, and played at your tempo? Now you can with the Digitech Trio Band Creator pedal!

More than a static, preset-pattern generator, the Trio is a band creator in a pedal. Plug in your guitar, press the footswitch, and the Trio learns your chords and rhythm by listening to what you play; press the footswitch again and the Trio automatically generates bass and drum parts to match.

The Trio has seven different musical genres to choose from and twelve different musical styles within each genre, selectable via the Genre and Style knobs. The Trio can learn three different song parts; verse, chorus, bridge, for example. All of these features are selectable in during playback, allowing you to “audition” different interpretations of your song. The Alt Time button offers another variation, usually half-time or double-time. The bass and drums have individual Level knobs and there’s a Tempo knob to slow-down or speed-up your song.

The Trio’s outputs are optimized to sound great whether you’re listening through your guitar amp, headphones or a mixer. Two different, appropriate guitar sounds, per genre, can be selected by pushing the GUITARFX button. This enables you to use the Trio with just your guitar, a cable, and a set of headphones.

Here’s two more points I thought were worth mentioning:

First, if you press and hold the Trio’s footswitch while one part is playing, the next Part button will flash and be cued up, ready to play when the previous Part ends.

Second, when you use both outputs on the Trio at the same time, the Bass and Drums automatically get routed to the Mixer output and your guitar goes to the Guitar output.

Basically, the Trio is your full-time rhythm section in a pedal – thanks for watching!

  1. Excellent. A drummer who won't try to screw your gf and a bass player who won't try to run the band. Sorry, couldn't resist…

  2. I’ve had one of these for a couple of years, haven’t done anything with it. I think its time . Good video.

  3. It's no that great there are very few positions where you can get a good beat and bass Usually the beat is way to fast and the bass is all over the place.I found that country was the best and rock next but the rest of them are crap .As far as I'm concerned it's a waste of money PLUS you cant save anything

  4. If i am olaying a made ip solo lead how will it know ?Id be playing it in e I normally play it on my keyboard with bass built in and just olay.

  5. If this would have a hardrock, punk, alt hardrock, funk metal, metal, nu metal or at least a few of those, i would definetly get it!
For now i'll stick with my drum machine from zoom multi fx and my looper.

Seems a really nice piece of gear tho ^^

  6. Don Carr has great presence, knows well the equipment when he does a demonstration, and is by far the best man for this type of video. I have watched literally hundreds of videos on You Tube, or, I should say, I have begun to watch hundreds of video demos here. I often stop watching because home-made demos often have poor sound or video quality. Sweetwater's demos are always top notch, and Don offers a straight forward explanation of the gear he demos. Now whenever I want to watch a demo, I look for a Sweetwater demo. Thanks, Don Carr!

  7. I bought a demo from Sweetwater. It's pretty decent but I have a hard time clearing one setting and having the pedal learn another, and getting the pedal to switch from play to learn and vice versa. What am I missing?

  8. Thank you so much. A demo/review that actually focuses on the product. Very clear and no "flash boy" guitaring. I am grateful and will now get the best out of my Band Creator.

  9. got this over the somewhat overpriced beatbuddy… thanks to another great sweetwater review… ignore the wannabes sweetwater know what theyre doing

  10. Great idea,,i want one.
I currently use a loop to warm up and practice, this goes one step further. Bass and drums in a box is very cool for those situations where you need just a duet at lower volume. I can expand the song list and The Improv time utilizing this tool.
Solo gigs duets and fill in time.
There is no way that you can replace real players I agree but for short stents and smaller projects this is perfect

  11. Curious how this would work in a whole pedalboard setup? Will distortion/overdrive or any other effect affect the bass and drum parts at all?

  12. So you go through all the programming to play one song? Why isn't there a way to record parts for several songs, like you'd use if you were playing a gig? Did I miss something?

  13. Good tool to discover what a terrible lead player you are… great for practicing leads/solos and timing. Amazing when you actually have to play and keep time in a band situation how much harder it is than just playing w/o rhythm section. Good practice tool but not for live. Headphone out makes this a band/amp in a box – great for travel and or late night practice.

  14. Nice demo…..easy to get ideas rather organized.
Does the TRS cable @ 5:04 have to have "stereo" connector plugs?

  15. anyone know a good way to hook this up good when using a modeling amp with effects. If you turn on effects it will mess up the bass and drums on trio.

  16. I am thinking about buying this. I going to try it out but a consumer on his review said the rhythm gets mixed up and can't go for a 3 minute song. He said it's almost perfect if Digitech just would have done it right.

  17. I'm currently using a Boss loop pedal as a tool to jam and practice my scales to… But THIS pedal is even more fitting for this purpose. It's absolute genius !
